Each child is required to have their own textbooks for the school year. Education is one of the highest priorities in children's lives. They know that doing well in school will ensure they can get a job and support themselves when they are older. If they do not do well, life will be difficult for them. Textbooks for the children in the orphanage have an entirely different meaning than they do for us. Every year, each child at the orphanage receives two uniforms for the new school year and two pairs of shoes with socks. One set of clothes to wear while the other is being washed. These uniforms are lightweight and breathable for the hot and humid conditions throughout the year in Southern India. Being worn every day, being made of lighter materials, and the fact that the children are active and growing, the uniforms are good for only one year. Even that is a stretch!
