A Weekend of Healing and Hope in San Diego

04/01/2026 by Ally Hiester

Our GFL San Diego Retreat this past weekend was a meaningful time centered on Jesus, healing, and being together in community. From the moment we arrived, there was a sense that this weekend would be set apart—a space to step away from everyday life and intentionally make room for rest, connection, and God’s presence.

We spent time in worship and prayer, creating space to focus on Jesus and lay down what we’ve been carrying. These moments invited us to slow down and be present, allowing God to meet us right where we are. There was a deep sense of peace throughout the weekend that grounded everything we did.

One of the most impactful parts of the retreat was a survivor-led painting workshop. This was more than just an activity—it became a powerful way to express emotions and experiences through creativity. It was meaningful to see survivors step into leadership and use their gifts to create a space where others could reflect, create, and process in a tangible way.

We also spent time exploring the town together, including an afternoon of thrift shopping. These moments were filled with laughter and connection, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy simple, lighthearted experiences together. It was a reminder of the joy that can exist alongside healing.

During the weekend, we celebrated a group birthday, which brought everyone together in a special way. Taking time to honor and celebrate someone’s life created a moment of joy and unity that added to the sense of community throughout the retreat.

Attending church together was another highlight. Gathering in worship as a group allowed us to collectively focus on truth, be encouraged, and experience faith in a shared space. It was a powerful reminder that we are not alone and that God is present in both personal and communal moments.

We ended our weekend at the beach, which was especially significant for many of the survivors who were experiencing the ocean for the very first time. Standing on the sand, taking in the vastness of the water, and simply being present in that moment carried a deep sense of meaning. It was a moment of newness, reflection, and quiet joy that many will carry with them long after the weekend.

The GFL San Diego Retreat was a time to be together, to encounter Jesus, and to experience moments of both joy and peace. We are grateful for each person who was part of this weekend and for the memories that were created along the way.
